HOW TO USE POCKET NAPPIES

Please wash your nappies at least once before first use. Washing (and drying) multiple times will increase the absorbency. Please read the washing instructions carefully at the bottom of this page.

Cloth Nappies Direct Pocket Nappies have a breathable yet waterproof outer cover, a soft suedecloth inner fabric, and a super absorbent microfiber insert. As a special feature, all our nappies also have double-gussets which assist in leak prevention. Benefits of pocket nappies include a faster drying time (as you can take the absorbent inserts out to dry separately), and adjustable absorption (as you can use more than one insert if desired).

Cloth nappies should be changed frequently. We recommend every 2 hours until your baby is old enough to only need a few changes each day. In general, nappies should be changed as soon as you know they are wet or dirty. Times when your baby is likely to wet their nappy are after feeding, after waking from a nap, after rides in the car, pram or carrier.

The nappies are designed for daytime use, however you can use them at night if baby is (a) going to wake for feeds and require a nappy change anyway or (b) baby is older and no longer feeding overnight, and not wetting the nappy overnight as much. We recommend using a second insert for extra absorption. You may also use the Bamboo Triangle Prefolds in the pocket, they are even more absorbent than the micro fibre inserts.

HOW TO WEAR

1. The nappies are a "one size fits most" nappy, and they can be adjusted to fit your baby as they grow. There is a set of vertical snaps to adjust the height, and a set of horizontal snaps to adjust the width around baby's waist, including snaps to hold the nappy on at the hips. Check the elastic around the inner thighs is not loose. Don't fit the nappy too tight or you will risk over-stretching the elastic (and cause discomfort to your baby!).

2. Take an insert and push it through the pocket opening at the back of the nappy. Push it all the way to the front and ensure it is lying flat (not twisted or bunched up in the middle).

3. Avoid using nappy rash creams. Some of the cream will end up in the wash with the nappies, and can affect the absorbency of the fabric. Changing your baby frequently will avoid nappy rash.

4. Check none of your baby's clothes are caught inside the nappy.

HOW TO WASH

1. Throw your dirty nappies into a waterproof washable wet bag. Nappies do not require soaking. You may wish to scent your nappy bin or bag with a few drops of essential oil on a handkerchief. When you're ready to wash, simply take the washable bag, empty it into the washing machine, and throw the bag in too. We recommend washing every 2 days to avoid stains. We recommend washing with cold water. Inserts may be washed hot but NEVER WASH YOUR COVERS IN HOT WATER as this can affect the waterproof layer of the nappy.

2. Never use bleach or stain removers. We recommend bi-carbonate soda with a few drops of essential oil (such as eucalyptus or tea tree), or a very gentle eco-friendly washing powder. Most washing powders, stain removers & fabric softeners reduce the absorbency of fabrics - not what you want for your nappies! They can also irritate baby's delicate skin.

3. Nappies are best dried in sunlight and fresh air. This sanitises the nappies and naturally bleaches out any stains. We recommend hanging the nappy covers with the inner cloth facing the sun to bleach out stains, while protecting the vibrant colours of your covers and the waterproof outer layer. Next best option is hanging close to a window to get as much natural light as possible. Otherwise if using a dryer, we recommend only drying the absorbent inserts, and line drying the covers.

STRIP WASHING

Strip washing is a method to remove all washing powders, bleach, fabric softeners, etc. from your nappies and give them new life. Strip washing is recommended if you notice your nappies are losing absorbency (ie. leaking), feel stiff from a buildup of detergent or nappy rash cream, or if baby is experiencing nappy rash. We recommend strip washing your inserts and covers separately, to prolong the life of the waterproof layer of your covers.

- Wash your inserts & covers as normal.
- Take your inserts and return them to the washing machine, on a hot wash with a splash of vinegar. Keep rinsing until there are no more soap suds. This may require several rinse cycles.
- Take your inserts out and put your covers in. Rinse on cold without any detergent or vinegar. Continue rinsing until there are no soap suds.
- Dry in direct sunlight where possible (with the inner of the covers facing outwards).
